The Sun is a dynamic and incredible star at the center of our solar system. Here are some unique facts about our closest star.

Size and Scale

The Sun is enormous. Its diameter is about 1.39 million kilometers (864,000 miles), which is over 109 times the diameter of Earth.

 

If the Sun were a hollow sphere, you could fit approximately 1.3 million Earths inside of it. In terms of mass, the Sun accounts for about 99.8% of the total mass of the entire solar system.

Composition and Temperature

The Sun is primarily composed of two elements: hydrogen and helium.

The core of the Sun is the hottest part, reaching temperatures of around 15 million degrees Celsius (27 million degrees Fahrenheit). The visible surface of the Sun, known as the photosphere, is much cooler, with a temperature of about 5,500 degrees Celsius (9,940 degrees Fahrenheit).

Solar Activity

The Sun is not a static object; it is constantly active. This activity results in various phenomena:

 

Rotation and Orbit

Unlike Earth, which is a solid body, the Sun is a plasma, causing it to rotate at different speeds depending on the latitude. This is called differential rotation.

 

 

The Sun also orbits the center of the Milky Way galaxy, completing one revolution in about 225-250 million years. This journey through space is happening at a speed of roughly 220 kilometers per second (137 miles per second).

Energy and Future

The Sun generates energy through nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium in its core. Every second, the Sun converts about 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium.

 

The Sun is currently a "yellow dwarf" star and is about 4.6 billion years old. Scientists estimate it is in the middle of its life cycle and will continue to burn for another 5 billion years. After that, it will expand into a Red Giant star, eventually engulfing Mercury and Venus, and possibly Earth, before collapsing into a White Dwarf.
